This blog once dead is now alive. While its only been a blink of an eye in human years, lots of things have changed in technology. What once was a VPS is now a container. Wordpress has been replaced by Ghost/Gatsby.

How we manage this technology has also changed. The container is built with TravisCI and deployed with Gitlab CI/CD onto a managed Kubernetes cluster. Gatsby scrapes the Ghost API then generates static HTML which gets served via Netlify and Cloudflare.

It sure sounds like a complicated mess but I assure you it's much simpler than it was to install and run a LAMP stack back in the day. It also has the following benefits:

  • Increased Security
  • Increased Performance
  • Lower Operational Overhead
  • Lower Cost

The lowered cost is another thing all together. You could run this site for $0 dollars a year. The CDN, the stock images, the automation and tooling are all free services. The mind boggles. The quality you get upfront and for free is amazing. The topic of zero marginal cost and the Economy of Sharing deserves its own future post.

It's not just the Technology or the Economy that has changed. I have changed. I'm living on the other side of the world. Doing work I never dreamed I would be doing. Lately I have been having this urge to Share. Too long have I scraped the minds of others for help and advice without offering anything in return.

So here I am and here you are kind stranger.  Thanks for stopping by and I hope you come back after a while to see what other mischief  I get into. I wish I had a plan or a roadmap for this but I don't... so who knows where will we end up.

I would like to thank unsplash-logoMarkus Spiske for the free image that I edited (poorly) for my sites background and to all the opensource contributors and entrepreneurs who run free services that make it possible for people like me to learn, experiment and write bad blogs ;)
